JOIN US AND LET’S BRING BACK THE RED DEER!
Poaching and careless cutting of forest had gradually led to the disappearance of this beautiful animal from Armenia and today the Red Deer is recorded in the Red Data Book of Armenia (2010) as “critically endangered”.
Notably, Armenia has been a habitat for the Red Deer since ancient times. On the petroglyphs (drawings and carvings on the rock) created thousands of years ago, which are found in the mountains of Armenia various types of animals are depicted including the Red Deer.
For the last 70 years people have had rare encounters with these impressive animals in Armenia but sadly, those were juts random visitors from neighboring countries.
WE NEED YOU TO REINTRODUCE THE RED DEER IN ARMENIA
Since 2013 we together with the Ministry of Environment of Armenia have embarked on a mission to reintroduce the Caspian Red Deer (Cervus elaphus maral) in Armenia.
Our overall goal is to restore the population of the Red Deer in Armenia in the coming 15 years. To make this goal happen we have started with building a Breeding Center of the Red Deer at the Dilijan National Park.
The Center is an open-air enclosure with the total area of 10 hectares where the first 14 deer were brought from the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2018.
Here the deer are fed regularly, are being taken good care of and heavily protected. Remarkably, since then more than 21 fawns had already been born in the Center.
FIVE MORE DEER WILL BE REALEASED INTO THE NATURE
We then release the deer born in the breeding center into the nature every year. Last year we released 3 individuals into the Dilijan’s forests and are planning to release 5 more this autumn.
But we can’t do it alone – we need your support. By donating you can help us reconstruct the food storage room at the Breeding Center, get a proper large refrigerator to keep the food for deer fresh and healthy as well as purchase special collars that will help us monitor the released Red Deer movements and collect critical data for further research and reintroduction.
