Brown bears are one of the most iconic carnivores, found in Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Kotayk, Aragatsotn, Tavush, and Lori marzes. However, they face significant threats that challenge their survival in the Armenian nature.
Brown bear populations have declined in many regions due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. Expanding human development into wilderness areas often leads to habitat fragmentation, making it harder for bears to find food and suitable denning areas. Poaching and persecution, driven by fear or economic incentives, further threaten their survival.
Conservation efforts aim to protect their habitats, reduce conflicts with humans, and educate local communities about coexistence.
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a highly adaptable species, inhabiting diverse ecosystems such as forests, mountains, tundras, and grasslands.
Brown bears can weigh between 100 and 600 kilograms (220–1,320 pounds) depending on their location, diet, and time of year. These solitary animals are also known for their impressive memory and intelligence, often recalling food sources even years later.
Bears can stand on two legs, walk on the soles of their feet, pick things up with their “fingers” and often eat what we eat, and treat themselves with a bit of honey. This—coupled with their ability to communicate with one another through scratch marks left on trees, smells and sounds—establishes a similarity to our own way of life.
They are excellent foragers and omnivorous creatures, consuming a diet that includes berries, roots, fish, and small mammals. Some brown bear populations, like those in the Arctic regions, are known for their salmon-rich diet, which is crucial for building fat reserves before hibernation.
The oldest wild brown bear on record was nearly 37 years old.
